There are a few different ways you can SORN a car:

You can SORN your vehicle over the telephone, the DVLA run a 24-hour call service you can get in touch with the DVLA on TEL: 0300 1234 321.

Reasons Why You Would SORN A Car

Gap year or moving abroad temporarily

If your vehicle is not taxed

If your vehicle is not insured

If you are keeping the car and breaking it for parts

If you buy a vehicle you want to keep off the road you will need to SORN it in your own name, SORN’s do not transfer owners.

You Can Only Drive Your Vehicle Under One Circumstance

You can only drive a vehicle that has been SORN on a public road if you are going to an MOT test. I if you are caught driving the car under any other circumstance then you can be fined over £2,500 or even face prosecution.

REMEMBER!

A SORN is not permanent, it needs to be renewed. When you receive a SORN document you will need to take down the expiry date. If you have a MyCarNeedsA.com account (free) in your account there is a section called ‘key dates and info’ you can set yourself reminders for all your key dates for your car and we will send you alerts closer to the time.

Getting Back On The Road

To get back on the road or remove your SORN all you need to do is MoT the vehicle, insure it and tax it and the vehicle will be ready for the road again. Just apply for your tax with the V5C and then you can get your insurance sorted.
