How to Test Brake Lights

You don’t need us to tell you have important it is to have working brake lights on your car. They’re a crucial safety feature, and act as a tool of courtesy to other drivers. Once you put your foot on the brake pedal, moving traffic behind you is alerted to you slowing down in preparation to turn or to stop. This gives traffic enough time to stop to avoid an accident. The police may even pull you over for having a brake light out and give you a verbal warning or a fine! Find out more about the rules on car lights here.

More modern cars will have a dashboard light to alert you that a brake light is out, but if that’s not the case for you then you need to get out and test your brake lights a few times a year. By testing your brake lights, you will avoid failing an MOT test, getting pulled over and you will be safe on the road.

How to test brake lights on your own

If you don’t have anyone around to help check your brake lights it is possible to do on your own! All you need is a brush/mop or something to put enough pressure on the brake pedal to engage the lights.

·Start by turning your ignition on and ensuring your vehicle is not in gear.

·Grab whatever you’re using to apply pressure on the brake pedal.

·Push down until the brake is engaged and lock it in place so that the pedal remains pushed down.

·Once you’re happy that there is enough pressure, go around to the back of your car and check your lights.

·Depending on what type of vehicle you own, you may have 3 or 2 brake lights. If you are unsure then check your manufacturer’s handbook.
