When you are considering purchasing an electric vehicle, the charging aspect of this car can be a huge influence on your buying decision.
Here at MyCarNeedsA.com, we are going to tell you everything you need to know about public charging points for electric vehicles- what they are, how long they take to charge and more!
When two or more charging points are located together, it is referred to as a charging station where you are able to charge your electric vehicle: just like a petrol station.
When EV’s first came out, the customer experience for a charging station was every poor; however, due to the increase in ownership, shopping centers or stores such as IKEA are teaming up with charging station providers, so, if you do need the bathroom or a refreshing drink, it should be close by.
If you are travelling for business or pleasure, or if you are new to the EV world, Zap-Map is the application for you to find a charging point near you.
According to Zap-Map there are over 15,000 public charging points in the UK and this number is set to increase: meaning there should be a public charging point near you.
Depending on your battery size and the make and model of your EV will have a huge impact on the length it takes to charge it.
The time it takes to recharge your battery is determined by how many kilowatts (kW) the charging station can provide (this will vary from station to station) and how many the car can accept.
There are three different charging rates:
Slow charging (rate= 3 kW): These type of charge will take around 6-8 hours to fill up a completely empty battery.
A 3-pin or a Type 2 socket connector is used.
Fast charging (rate= 7-22 kW): A fast charge will take around 3/4 hours to charge an empty battery and is the most common rate at public charging stations.
The majority of fast chargers have a Type 2 connector.
Rapid charging (rate= 43- 50 kW): Very few electric cars are able to charge at this rate. For example, if you own a Tesla Model S, using this rapid charging point for 30 minutes will give you an almost full battery.
